Does Diabetes Affect Girls More?


Diabetes- a chronic disease impairing the blood sugar that regulates in the human body. It affects both male and female. According to a report provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in ten adult females, all over the world, has diabetes. It is a group of metabolic diseases which can affect people of any sex, race, caste, status, lifestyle or age.

Reasons for diabetes in women

Diabetes affects males and females differently. The reasons for this are listed following;

  • The complications of diabetes are difficult to diagnose in females.

  • Females often get less aggressive treatment for heart and cardiovascular risk factors.

  • Women have different cardiac diseases than men.

  • Inflammations, glands and hormones work differently in females.

Causes of diabetes in females

Diabetes has a similar effect on both, men and women. But some of it is specific to female only;

  • Vaginal and Oral Yeast Infections and Vaginal thrush: Candida fungus causes the overgrowth of yeast that results in the most common infections in women body; like oral yeast infections, vaginal yeast infections, and vaginal thrush. The high level of sugar and glucose in the blood fuel the growth of fungus. These infections develop soreness, itching, and vaginal discharge in the vaginal area. It may also lead to painful sex.

  • Female Sexual Dysfunction: When the nerve fibers of the body get damaged by the high level of blood glucose, it gives rise to diabetic neuropathy. It causes loss of sensation and feelings and tingling in various parts of the body; especially hands, feet, and legs.

  • Urinary Tract Infections (UTI): When bacteria get to enter into the urinary tract, it causes UTI. The risk of urinary infection is higher in females who are suffering from diabetes. It causes a burning sensation, painful, cloudy or bloody urine that may also lead to severe kidney infection.

  • Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS): PCOS is a common problem in females now a day. The production of a higher amount of male hormones gives rise to this syndrome. It may lead to irregular periods, acne, infertility, weight gain, and depression.

Symptoms of diabetes in women

The symptoms that usually women experience in undiagnosed diabetes are;

  • Fatigue

  • Weight loss or gain

  • High fever

  • Frequent thirst or hunger

  • Nausea

  • Wound heals slowly

  • Skin infections

  • Blurred vision

  • Irritability

Risk factors in women for diabetes

According to a report provided by the Office on Women’s Health (OWH) at the United States Department of Health and Human Services, the factors that cause diabetes in women are;

  • The woman above the age of 45 years

  • Obesity and overweight

  • The family history of diabetes; which includes parents or siblings

  • High blood pressure

  • High cholesterol level

  • Gestational diabetes

  • Any heart disease or cardiovascular problem or stroke

  • Other health issues connected to problems using insulins


You can take the following steps to prevent, cure, and avoid complications in diabetes.

  • Medications: You can visit or consult the doctor and take the medicines prescribed. Moreover, insulin therapy is available for all people who are suffering from type 1 diabetes. Metformin (Glucophage) is another medication which you can opt to reduce sugar level in the blood.

  • Lifestyle: The lifestyle deeply creates an impact on our health. A little change in the lifestyle may help you to manage, cure, and prevent diabetes. It is must to include exercise in your daily routine. It will make you healthy and will help you in maintaining your body weight; as obesity is the prime reason for diabetes nowadays. Smoking is injurious to health. It also causes chronic disease. Avoid so. Add healthy food in your diet. Prefer to have fresh fruits, leafy and green vegetables and whole grains. And most importantly, keep a regular check on your blood sugar. This will definitely help you in maintaining the blood sugar.

  • Alternate remedies: There are varieties of remedies available that can prevent and cure diabetes. You can take supplements like magnesium, calcium and chromium along with plant supplements. Moreover, you can add buckwheat, peas, sage, fenugreek seeds, and broccoli in your diet. Prefer to eat fruits that are diabetic friendly.
