Problems during or after breastfeeding

Latch pain: It is normal for every nursing mother to feel sore at the beginning of breastfeeding. And if your baby latched then it hurts a lot. The latched pain will last long for more than 2 to 3 minutes. To overcome this problem, you need to check the position of your baby. Make the baby open the mouth by teasing their mouth with nipples. When they open their mouth widely, keep the nipples on their nose by hugging him. Then the head of the infant will automatically tilt in the back and move the nipples around their mouth. Press the chin of the baby against your breast and ensure that the nose should touch the breast. Mummas should notice that the jaw of their babies should move forth and back; and not upwards and downwards. This is the correct latch.

Cracked nipples: Dry skin, latching issues, and pumping improperly give rise to cracked nipples. You may have bloody discharge at the beginning of breastfeeding; as your baby is learning to latch and pump. For this, you need to keep an eye on your child’s position. Make sure that the bottom part areola underneath the nipples must be in the child’s mouth. You should try nursing frequently or in the very short interval; because the less baby will hungry, the more softly he sucks. Moreover, avoid using perfumes, lotions, alcohol, soaps, and medicines as they can crack your nipples and make them dry.

Plugged or clogged ducts: Ducts get clogged due to improper draining of milk. Sometimes, you get hard lumps on the breast and may feel sore and redness while touching. It is not harmful to the child as breast milk contains natural antibiotics. But you should apply warm compresses and massage your breast for proper stimulation of milk. Moreover, if you have a fever and feel pain, you must visit the doctor for better prescriptions. Another reason for clogged ducts is stress, anxiety and fear. However, wearing tight and hard nursing bra may also cause plugged or clogged ducts.

Engorgement or high milk supply: It is quite difficult for baby to latch on the breast as engorgement makes it hard and inconvenient for baby to grab with his mouth. Mummas should try with their hand to express a bit before start feeding. It will make the milk flow out easily and also soften the breast. Your baby will feel comfortable and easy to latch and get the milk.

Mastitis: Mastitis is a bacterial infection in the breasts which is determined by the symptoms of flu such as pain in the breasts, feeling nausea, and having a fever. It is mainly caused by clogged ducts of milk, cracked and dry skin, and engorgement.

Baby sleeps at the breast: Baby usually finds pleasant to sleep at their mother’s breast while feeding. Though it makes a strong and loving bond between Mumma and Baby, it creates a problem for mothers; especially in the beginning.

Flat or inverted nipples: Try to detect whether you have nipples are flat and inverted nipples or not. Calmly grab the areola with the help of your thumb and index finger. And if your nipples retract instead of protruding than you need to consult the doctor.

Pain in the breast: Pain in breasts is a common problem for every nursing mother.

Skipping night feeding: Do not skip the night feeding. Remember the rule of demand and supply. The more you skip, the less the baby feed and the less the body will produce.

Pacifiers: Do not make much use of the pacifier to your baby in the initial period. This may cause nipple confusion regarding nipples and the infant may latch on the pacifier in a different manner.

Wrong Position: It is quite difficult to get the right position for breastfeeding. The easiest and comfortable position for the mother and the new baby is the cross cradle. Mummas must ensure to use a breastfeeding pillow while feeding their baby. It is must have their arms, back and baby support strongly on something by sitting. The face of the infant should be in a line facing the chest and hugging the mother’s breast with their arms. Make sure to hold firmly the neck, shoulder, head and the body of the baby. The best posture is placing the hand in U shape under the breast.

Fixing feeding schedule: Do not make a fixed schedule for feeding your baby. Try to feed the newborn child at least 10 to 15 times a day and get yourself ensure about the supply of breast milk. Frequent breastfeeding helps to improve breast milk supply.

Ignoring own health: Breastfeeding mothers should take care of themselves as a healthy mother will up bring a happy and healthy baby. Your health condition may make an impact on the breast milk supply. You should include healthy and nutritious food in her meal. Green leafy veggies are good and healthy for everyone. It consists of lactogenic properties and phytoestrogens which are responsible for producing milk. Adding cabbage, spinach, broccoli, and other leafy vegetables will help in the growth of a newborn baby. It also gives relieve with constipation and stress.

Forgetting to quench the thirst: As the largest amount of breast milk is made up of water, so it is necessary for the nursing mother to keep herself hydrate all the time. Water is the most essential, important and vital thing to add in your diet while nursing. Breastfeeding mothers drain their energy while feeding and tend to suffer from dehydration. It is must to keep your energy level up by drinking plenty of water. You can also choose milk, fruit juice, and other healthy drinks. But make sure not to take caffeinated drinks like soft drinks, tea and coffee.
